Auctioning off high-band spectrum has been a primary objective for the FCC since at least 2016. In the higher 37 GHz, 39 GHz, and 47 GHz bands, the first 5G spectrum auctions have taken place. On top of these auctions, the Commission is working to free up 2.75 GHz of 5G spectrum in the 26 GHz and 42 GHz bands. This brings the total amount of 5G spectrum the market can use to 5 GHz.
